I’ve been using a down sleeping bag for more than 15 years and have all but given up on sleeping bags with synthetic insulation, until I got to try the Vaude Sioux 400 SYN and realised that synthetic insulation has come a very long way since I last tried it.
Vaude have been going since 1974 and their continual design improvements show in this bag. I was amazed at how comfortable I was in this affordable bag. From the 3-D shaped footbox, to the fitted cowl and the zip-baffle to keep any cold air from creeping in, it ticks all the boxes.Sleeping out in the open during a pretty chilly 5°C night, I was completely comfortable. This makes the Sioux an ideal bag for almost year-round use for lower lying areas and the perfect all-rounder for spring, summer and autumn.
Some people prefer a more square-cut sleeping bag that allows room for movement, but that always comes at the cost of heat retention as there is more air to heat up and more air movement. The mummy shape of the Sioux is just another part of its design that increases its temperature ratings.
The easy-to-use drawstring cinches the cowl and chest area down to fit snug around one’s face, sealing in warmth.
The quality YKK zip runs smoothly and I experienced almost no snagging, despite the generous baffle.
There’s also an internal pocket for storing anything that needs to stay warm, like batteries that would otherwise lose charge on a cold night.
It comes in a standard size which accommodates a body length of 190cm, a small version, which accommodates a body length of 170cm and an XL version which accommodates a body length of 205cm.
The Sioux also carries the Green Shape label, which offers functional, environmentally-friendly products made from sustainable materials. Find out more about Green Shape.
At R1440, the Vaude Sioux 400 SYN offers excellent value for money! With a fairly versatile temperature range and weighing only 950g, you can’t go wrong with this sleeping bag. If you’re planning on doing the Otter Trail and looking for a sleeping bag that will do the job, but won’t break the bank, look no further.
